Marine Golf Club, Sylt, Germany

Project Details

We designed a new championship links course for the Marine Golf Club which lies on the famous island of Sylt, in the north of Germany, where many celebrities and wealthy businessmen have holiday homes. The site was formerly used as an airfield and most of the land was originally flat. Large concrete roads needed to be broken up, new dunes created (up to 4m height in places), revetted bunkers built and native dune grasses introduced to give the course a typical Scottish links style. Site sand was used for the construction of greens and tees, to avoid the environmentally and economically costly importation of suitable soil from the mainland, and a water-farming system was installed to gather rainwater from the site into a central reservoir for irrigation purposes.
